Given the choice, most of us would surely prefer to use their desktop machine for working on office documents rather than the tiny screen of their mobile. However, there are times when it’s useful, such as checking a written assignment on the bus into university, or doing some last minute tweaks of an Excel sheet on the way to a meeting.

MobiSystems OfficeSuite helps you view and edit your office documents on the go – and it’s remarkable how painless it makes this. The program allows you to open and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, as well as many other popular formats, (RTF, TXT, etc.)

There are two different modes in MobiSystems OfficeSuite – ‘View’ mode, which lets you open and read documents, and ‘Edit’ mode, where you can actually manipulate the document, saving it back to its original format.

Opening documents in MobiSystems OfficeSuite is a quick and effortless task, and once a document has loaded you’ll find a bevy of editing tools at your disposal, whether you’re using the word processor, spreadsheet, or presentation app. Granted, there aren’t as many features as Word, Excel or Powerpoint, but OfficeSuite is nevertheless surprisingly powerful, enabling features such as image embedding, hyperlink support, password protection, and much more. The application also includes spelling assistance in six languages (English, German, Spanish, French, Dutch and Italian), featuring auto-complete and underlining of mis-spelt words.

Ultimately, of course, using an office suite on a mobile phone will always be hampered by the small screen size. There is a zoom functionality MobiSystems OfficeSuite, where you can pre-select the zoom percentage or customize it yourself. However, I feel the program could’ve gone a little further in terms of making viewing easier. For instance, it would’ve been nice to have a way of quickly zooming in and out using hotkeys or the directional buttons, instead of having to wade through the options menu every time.

Aside from this point, MobiSystems OfficeSuite is a fast and powerful solution for viewing and editing documents on the move.

The software doesn’t offer any special features to shout about, but if you’re looking for an easy way of remotely controlling your computer from your iPhone, Mocha VNC is worth a look.

Psarakia 1.3-Free the fish from the blocks of ice

Fishing in the North Pole can be a rather chilling experience, especially for the fish.

And so it is in Psarakia, where not only do you have to pull out as many colorful fish from the freezing water as you can but you need to defrost them from the ice too. Oh, and there’s only a limited amount of time for you to be able to do this.

In order to play Psarakia you need to select adjacent blocks on the screen that contain the same kind of fish. The ice then breaks and the fish appear. The object of the game is to match two or more of each fish in vertical and horizontal rows. The more fish you match, the more points you earn and the quicker you get to the next levels.

Options in Psarakia are a little thin on the ground. You can set the difficulty before you start and have music on or off. Although changes in difficulty make the game a little more interesting Psarakia can still get rather repetitive.

You might get hooked for a while, but ultimately Psarakia isn’t something you’ll stick with for long.

Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs Scrat’s Skate Park 1.1-Hang out on the skate ramp with Sid and Scrat

If you’re a fan of Ice Age and also happen to fancy yourself as a skater then you’ll probably be interested to try this iPhone game.

The snappily-titled Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs Scrat’s Skate Park sees you take control of one of the game’s main protagonists, Scrat, Buck or Sid. Once you’ve selected who you want to be, it’s off to the half pipe where you need to perform skateboarding tricks to score points.

All the controls in Scrat’s Skate Park are done by rocking or tipping the iPhone up-and-down and side-to-side. Collecting dinosaur eggs or acorns will build up your points score and make you go faster. Be careful where you land though, because if you hit an ice block it’ll soon throw you off your stride.

I’m a massive fan of Ice Age but my big problem with this game is that it gets boring very quickly. Sure, it looks nice, with authentic looking and sounding representations of Scrat and Sid, but the gameplay soon gets very tedious. It’s a novelty at first being able to get air and do spins by rocking your iPhone, but ultimately this is not enough, and the small selection of tricks, power-ups or varied challenges makes this one game that you won’t be playing for very long.

Die-hard Ice Age fans will enjoy this for a while, but Scrat’s Skate Park is no Tony Hawk’s.

Fling! 1.1.2-Flinging fun with furry fellows

You know how those cute mogwais turn into Gremlins when fed after midnight? Well, that’s very much like the experience of playing Fling!

At first, you’ll be taken in by the cute little characters, sweet music and simple gameplay. Once you get past the first few levels though, Fling! turns into a beast of a game, becoming so infuriatingly difficult that you’ll probably want to explode your iPhone in the microwave.

The object of Fling! is simply to clear the board of the little furry characters. You do this by ‘flinging’ one into another to knock it off the board. You need to think logically though, because you can only fling the creatures in a straight line, so you have to make sure none of them get stranded. As I say, the first few training levels are a breeze but Fling! soon becomes very taxing, even on the easiest of the three difficulty levels.

There are three different game modes in Fling! – Arcade, (where you have a given time to solve each puzzle before moving to the next level), Free Play, and Challenge (you have to solve a given number of puzzles within a set time limit).

The graphics in Fling! are cute and colorful and the background music fits well, even if it does get a bit monotonous after a while.

Fling! is a nice little pick-up-and-play timewaster, but it does get a bit frustrating after a while.
