X2 Football 2009 Lite 1.5.1-Realistic soccer sim for iPhone

I’m a huge fan of console football sims, but have yet to find a decent soccer game on the iPhone – until I played X2 Football 2009, that is.

This excellent soccer simulation looks and feels a lot like Pro Evoltion Soccer, only a little scaled back, of course. The control system in X2 Football 2009 will feel very comfortable and familiar for anyone who has played a football game on their console. On the left of the screen is an analog ‘stick’ which controls the movement of the players, and on the right are a series of three buttons for passing, shooting, lobbing, tackling, changing player, etc. The actions of the buttons depend on whether you are attacking or defending. It doesn’t take long to get used to the controls, but there’s plenty of help within the game if you get stuck.

The graphics and animation in X2 Football 2009 are polished and the game physics are impressively realistic. The sound effects and commentary have been lovingly implemented too, making for an absorbing and enjoyable football experience. I also love the fact that all the teams in the game have real player names and authentic kits. There’s a decent selection of international sides to choose from but no club teams unfortunately.

This Lite version of X2 Football 2009 is frustratingly limited, only allowing you to play in training mode or take part in a penalty shootout. Nevertheless it gives you a good chance to try out all the moves and get used to the gameplay.

Expecting an iPhone soccer sim to play like a FIFA or a Pro Evo is asking a bit much I guess. X2 Football’s main limitations are in its lack of tricks and special moves, and the fact that there’s no two-player mode.

On the whole though, X2 Football 2009 is an enjoyable soccer game, which raises the bar for the genre on the iPhone.

LightSaber 1.62-Convert your N95 into a Star Wars light saber

Growing up in the Eighties, most of my pals wanted to be Luke Skywalker. None of them made it. However, these days there are so many fancy dress costumes and Star Wars toys around that it’s quite easy to pretend you’re a Jedi.

Now you can take the Force around with you wherever you go thanks to this rather fun app for the Nokia 95. The device’s much-hyped ‘accelerometer’ allows the phone to track movements, meaning that every time you swing the device LightSaber plays the sound of the famous war stick.

The noises are pretty realistic and it features the famous swooshing sound along with the noise of two light sabers touching. There’s also an illuminated screen that’s great for impressing your mates in the dark (or demonstrating how sad you are to be waving around a phone and pretending it’s a weapon from Star Wars).

LightSaber is a fun diversion and a good example of how the power of the N95′s accelerometer can be harnessed by applications, in much the same way as the motion-sensitive controllers for the Wii work.

Ultimately, LightSaber doesn’t actually serve any purpose, but it will provide endless laughs for Star Wars fans with an N95.

Mine Hunter 3.0-Free version of Minesweeper for your phone

Minesweeper has been relieving boredom for Windows users for years now, and countless clones of the game have cropped up over time.

Mine Hunter is a fairly bog-standard Minesweeper port for Java-enabled cellphones. The object of the game is the same as always – find the hidden mines on the grid without getting blown up. When you uncover a square on the board (using the ’5′ key or center button) a number will be shown, which indicates the number of bombs that are touching that square. Using your powers of deduction (and a little luck) you need to flag the squares you think contain mines and uncover all the rest of them.

There are four difficulty levels within Mine Hunter, so the game is perfect for beginners and seasoned minesweepers alike. There’s also a high scores table, challenging you to constantly improve on your previous bests.

As I mentioned before, Mine Hunter is a fairly standard version of the game. So don’t expect flashy graphics or any kind of new twist on the gameplay.

That said, Minesweeper is still a classic puzzle game, and Mine Hunter is a version that lets you enjoy it in its purist form.

Let it Snow Theme-Invite a winter teddy bear to your phone

In the summer the teddy bears like to go out fand enjoy a good a picnic but as soon as winter comes they end up out in the cold. At least, that’s if all bears are like the one in the Let it Snow Theme.

The bear featured in this theme for Series 60 5th Edition phones looks oh-so cute, dressed up in his winter woollies. As you might expect, the main image in the Let it Snow Theme also features a series of snowflakes, dotted about the bear. To be honest though, I thought the design of the snow could’ve been a lot better. The flakes are too large in comparison with the bear, and they are arranged in a very uniform pattern.

The Let it Snow Theme also changes the color scheme of your phone’s interface, applying a cool gray-blue and white skin to the menus. This not only looks classy, it is also very much in-keeping with the wintry theme.

If you’re a teddy bear fan then you’ll probably love the Let it Snow Theme, but for everyone else, there are lots of better Christmas-related phone themes out there.
