If you’re a fan of Super Mario-style platform adventures then here’s one you can play on your way into work.

Glitch is a game that features “a cartoon character trapped inside a video game”. Personally, I’ve never seen any shows with him in it, but he seems a cute enough little guy. Apparently he’s lost his memory in the digitalization process that took him into the video game. And guess what? It’s your job to help Glitch get back his powers of recall.

It’s a wonderful premise for a game, but sadly Glitch is nothing more than an average platformer. It has all the hallmarks of those 90s 8-bit classics like Mario, Alex Kid, Wonderboy, etc., with fantastical scenes, strange enemies and treacherous jumps. I’m sure Glitch would be great fun on the NES or the Master System, but it simply doesn’t play well on a small screen device. The controls are very fiddly and the small graphics strain your eyes, so it becomes a bit frustrating.

The introduction of an online high scores feature helps to increase the longevity of Glitch, but the game still does get pretty monotonous.

Glitch is good for a sharp burst of 80s platform game fun, but it’s not one you’ll want to keep on your phone for long.

I’m a huge fan of console football sims, but have yet to find a decent soccer game on the iPhone – until I played X2 Football 2009, that is.

This excellent soccer simulation looks and feels a lot like Pro Evolution Soccer, only a little scaled back, of course. The control system in X2 Football 2009 will feel very comfortable and familiar for anyone who has played a football game on their console. On the left of the screen is an analog ‘stick’ which controls the movement of the players, and on the right are a series of three buttons for passing, shooting, lobbing, tackling, changing player, etc. The actions of the buttons depend on whether you are attacking or defending. It doesn’t take long to get used to the controls, but there’s plenty of help within the game if you get stuck.

The graphics and animation in X2 Football 2009 are polished and the game physics are impressively realistic. The sound effects and commentary have been lovingly implemented too, making for an absorbing and enjoyable football experience. I also love the fact that all the teams in the game have real player names and authentic kits. There’s a decent selection of international sides to choose from but no club teams unfortunately.

Expecting an iPhone soccer sim to play like a FIFA or a Pro Evo is asking a bit much I guess. X2 Football’s main limitations are in its lack of tricks and special moves, and the fact that there’s no two-player mode.

On the whole though, X2 Football 2009 is an enjoyable soccer game, which raises the bar for the genre on the iPhone.

Old classics like Breakout never die out, but over the years they do evolve into something far beyond the wildest imagination of the original developers.

If you’d told me 20 years ago that I’d one day be playing a 3D version of Breakout with strobe-style explosions and synthesized robot speech, I’d have called you an idiot. If you’d then added that I’d be doing this on my phone I would have called for the men in white coats. Luckily that didn’t happen or I’d be scoffing down humble pie now, because 3D Brick Bricker delivers exactly the gaming experience I could never have dreamed up back in the day.

3D Brick Breaker is the best brick-busting game I’ve played on the iPhone, by a long way. From the creepy talking robot who introduces the game, to the gorgeously-crafted 3D environments, 3D Brick Breaker is a polished looking version of the old classic. This hasn’t come at the expense of the gameplay, which is just as pulsating and addictive as the original Breakout game. If anything, the gameplay has been enriched by the addition of explosive power-ups such as guns, mines, lasers and fireballs, which help you bust up the blocks more quickly.

The controls in 3D Brick Breaker take a bit of getting used to, and it does feel a bit cumbersome at first. You can move the paddle by pressing the left and right arrows on either side of the screen. If you have headphones plugged in, access to the left arrow is a little uncomfortable because you don’t have much room for maneuver. The alternative control system is to hold down the paddle itself and move from side-to-side, but this serves to impede your view of the ball.

Once you’ve mastered the controls though, 3D Brick Breaker proves to be an entertaining and visually spectacular game.
