If you work in the building trade or are a DIY enthusiast then here is an app that might make your life easier.

Bubble is a free spirit level for your Android phone. Simply install the app on your phone and you’ve always got a way to measure if a surface is straight or not. You can use any side of the phone to measure the angle of a surface. Just rest the edge of the phone against the surface and keep an eye on the bubble. You can also measure a surface by laying your phone face up on the surface. If the bubble is dead in the center of the gage then the surface is flat. If it’s not flat then the position of the bubble to the left of right of the center will indicate how off it is.

Before you start, you should calibrate Bubble so that the readings are accurate. This is very easy and is achieved merely by resting each side of your phone against a surface you know is straight then pressing the Calibrate button.

There are a number of settings you can tweak to make Bubble more effective. For instance, you can choose to show the numeric value of the angle, enable beeps or buzzers that play when a surface is level, or switch to a black background.

I have few criticisms of Bubble, other than that it would’ve been good to be able to change the color of the liquid in the spirit level, and maybe choose from some more background.

But if you want to measure the angle of a surface without rushing out to the hardware store, Bubble makes for a reliable and easy solution.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band are two of the most innovative console games of the last ten years. Now you can enjoy the wonders of virtual instruments on the go, by installing Rock Band on your iPhone.

I must admit I had a touch of stage fright before playing this, because I was worried about how it could recreate the magic of the Rock Band experience on a small screen. The console version is played with lifelike instruments that you plug into your PlayStation or XBox, whereas the iPhone of Rock Band is just played by tapping your fingers on the screen. How on Earth could it be as fun as the original?

Of course, it would never be the same as playing with the full Rock Band kit, but the iPhone version is a lot more fun and responsive than I was anticipating. You get to choose from four different instruments – bass, guitar, drums, and vocals – and all of them are excellently presented. From the animations above the game board to the vibrant neon colors, the graphics are almost worthy of a console – and the sound is superb too.

This free version of Rock Band lets you sample all of the various instruments in Quick Play mode. Unfortunately, it only gives you one song (‘Learn to Fly’ by The Foo Fighters). I know it’s free, but I thought just including a single track was a little tight on the part of EA.

This said, Rock Band is easily one of the most fun to play iPhone games of this year, and it’s well worth upgrading after trying out this free version.

Space Invaders Infinity Gene has a great concept – take the original arcade game, and then evolve it level by level, making almost a history of shoot ‘em ups along the way.

The first thing to say about Space Invaders Infinity Gene is that the controls are great – you move the space ship with your finger, but it’s relative movement, so you can play with your finger beneath the ship, keeping the action easy to see. Firing is automatic, although you can toggle it on and off with a three-finger tap.

Starting exactly like the original, with only horizontal movement, Space Invaders Infinity Gene soon frees your movement, and brings in lots and lots of new enemies and power-ups. The levels in the main game offer a great deal of variety and, thanks to their minimalist graphics, always look great. There’s also a music mode, which generates levels for any song on your iPhone. This means the number of levels to play is only limited by your music collection!

Any shoot ‘em up fan will love Space Invaders Infinity Gene, and it may well be my favorite game on the iPhone. The presentation is perfect, it’s accessible yet challenging, and offers tons of unlock-able content.

With cool retro vector graphics, excellent sound, fantastic controls and great gameplay, Space Invaders Infinity Gene is one of the best hand-held games available today.
