Space Invaders Infinity Gene Lite 1.0.0-The original arcade classic, evolved

Space Invaders Infinity Gene has a great concept – take the original arcade game, and then evolve it level by level, making almost a history of shoot ‘em ups along the way.

The first thing to say about Space Invaders Infinity Gene is that the controls are great – you move the space ship with your finger, but its relative movement, so you can play with your finger beneath the ship, keeping the action easy to see. Firing is automatic, although you can toggle it on and off with a three finger tap.

Starting exactly like the original, with only horizontal movement, Space Invaders Infinity Gene soon frees your movement, and brings in lots and lots of new enemies and power ups. The levels in the main game offer a great deal of variety, and with their minimalist graphics always look great. There’s also a music mode, which generates levels for any song on your iPhone. This means the number of levels to play is only limited by your music collection!

Any shoot ‘em up fan will love Space Invaders Infinity Gene, and it may well be the best game on the iPhone. The presentation is perfect and it’s accessible yet challenging, although this version is very short.

With cool retro vector graphics, excellent sound, fantastic controls and great gameplay, Space Invaders Infinity Gene is one of the best hand-held games available today.

Azenis MX (S60 5th)-Nature meets technology in this striking theme

If you’re looking for a way to make your S60 5th Edition phone look even better, Azenis MX can help give it a fresh new style.

The free theme marries a slick, futuristic user interface with background images from nature to create a striking skin for your phone. Azenis MX comes with five beautiful, high quality natural scenes, featuring plants and insects, that really bring life to your phone’s home screen.

Azenis MX applies a new style to your phone’s menus too. This includes a fantastic set of glowing, glass effect icons, and a mesh style background that looks like something Apple would design. Pop-up menus are given a gray and white color scheme to make them perfectly match the new skin.

On the downside, some users have reported visibility issues when installing Azenis MX on the Nokia N97. Also, the installation is complicated by the fact that the background wallpapers need to be loaded in from a folder, rather than included in the .sis file.

All in all though, an attractive interface to adorn your phone.

Metal Detector 1.2-Turn your phone into a metal detector

I bet you thought the built-in compass on your Android phone was only useful for map applications, right? Well, the developer of Metal Detector has put this hardware feature to good use for another thing – finding metal!

That’s right, amazingly, the magnetic field detection properties of the in-built compass can be harnessed to sense if their is metal around. Metal Detector provides a simple and fun way to do this. Simply turn the program on, and it will start scanning for signals. The closer it gets to some metal the higher the meter will read. If it reaches the top of the bar, it’ll confirm that metal has indeed been detected. There’s a calibration feature built into Metal Detector that lets you adjust the sensitivity.

There are a number of settings you can play around with that make Metal Detector even more fun to use. For instance, you can set the phone to vibrate or play a sound (of your choosing) when it’s found metal, and even alter the text that displays when the app is scanning or finding metal. For instance you could prank your iPhone-using pals by changing the text to say ‘Detecting crap phones’. When Metal Detector is passed by the iPhone and picks up the signal it could say something like ‘You should get an Android’.

Metal Detector is not a gimmick, in the sense that it can actually detect metallic objects using your phone’s sensor. However, it’s not the most accurate or practical way of finding metal. If you use it near a magnetic field (i.e. sat near your computer), the app can get confused and the results are not reliable. Also, bear in mind that the detector isn’t particularly strong, so you need to move your phone right next to the metallic object, which kind of defeats the object of a metal detector.

If you’re looking for buried treasure on the beach, Metal Detector will be pretty useless. However, it is good fun to use and great for impressing people with the powers of your Android phone.

Shazam 1.8.4-What’s that song? Just ask Shazam

Ever hear a song you like on the radio, on TV or at a party but don’t know what it’s called? Install Shazam on your iPhone and you can find out.

Whenever you hear a tune you dig, simply hold your iPhone’s microphone to the speaker. Shortly after, as if by magic details of the song will appear in the Shazam interface, including the name of the song, the singer, and the album it appears on.

That’s not all either, in many cases Shazam will provide a link to the song’s video on YouTube, and offer the possibility to buy the track on iTunes.

But how can Shazam know so much about all this music? Well, Shazam ‘hears’ the song through your iPhone’s microphone and uses your mobile Internet connection to compare the sounds it receives with those recorded in a huge online database of music. If it finds a match Shazam will provide you with the information immediately, and offers you the ability to email it to a friend if you wish. While Shazam can’t recognize every song in the World, it managed to get most we tested it with.

If you’re a fan of music (and, let’s face it, who isn’t?) then Shazam is an essential addition to your iPhone.

AroundMe 3.5.1-Find shops, restaurants, bars and amenities around you

Just like the Beach Boys, I get around quite a bit. As a result I’m forever having to ask people where the nearest supermarket is, where to find a taxi rank, or whether there are any decent bars or restaurants in the vicinity.

With AroundMe this is no longer a worry because the program is able to provide me with this information in just a couple of clicks. The iPhone software automatically detects your current location and provides one-click access to lists of the nearest: banks, bars, cafes, gas stations, hospitals, hotels, movie theaters, parking, pharmacies, pubs, restaurants, supermarkets, taxis and theaters.

Click on any of these categories and AroundMe will bring up a list of those type of business in a remarkably quick time. You can then click on one of the suggestions to get the full address and phone number of the business, which you can add to your iPhone’s contacts with a single click. Hit ‘Show Route’ and AroundMe will display the directions from your current location, via Google Maps.

I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of results returned by AroundMe. Granted, I live in a big city but from anecdotal information I’ve heard from users in smaller towns I gather that AroundMe provides decent results in these less built-up areas too.

AroundMe is very quick and simple to use but I felt it’s usefulness could still be improved upon. For instance, it’s not possible to view the results in order of proximity, meaning you often have to flick through a few pages before you find the closest. Also, it would’ve been great to see more information about each place, such as guides, reviews or even just a link to the company’s web site.

All in all though, AroundMe is a very handy thing to have in your pocket when you’re out and about.

SmartLight 1.85 (S60 3rd)-Don’t be in the dark

SmartLight enables you to see what you are doing on your phone without having to nudge a button to stop everything going dark. The program works in the background so whenever you have your menu open or an application running you can see what you’re doing.

It’s especially good, for example, if you’re looking at photos. SmartLight will keep your screen lit up without you doing anything. When you return to the idle screen SmartLight switches off and the light fades after 11 seconds or so.

Evernote 3.0.249-Organize and synchronize everything!

Not all of us have the memory of an Elephant, and if you’re the kind of person who always forgets what you should be doing or where you’re supposed to be going then it’s high time you did something about it.

Evernote is an application and web service that lets you capture, store and synchronize all manner of information on your BlackBerry, PC and online, all at the same time. It allows you to store all manner of items, including text notes, voice notes, images and files.

Once you’ve installed the program on your device, you’ll need to sign up for a free Evernote account. After this short registration process you’ll be presented with a very clear and touch-friendly interface. From here, you’re just a tap away from adding a text note, a handwritten ink note, taking a snapshot on your camera, recording an audio note, or uploading a file. The Settings menu in Evernote allows you to view your current monthly usage, and tweak things such as the camera resolution and the way the notes are displayed on screen.

Now, whenever you don’t have your BlackBerry to hand you’ll be able to access any notes or files you’ve added in Evernote from any web browser. These can then be edited, deleted, printed or emailed at your leisure. Personally, I found the layout of the online interface quite uncomfortable – unlike the handheld version of Evernote, the text is very small, and the strange menu system makes browsing through your items overly complicated.

From the browser-based version of Evernote you can add notes and files like with the device version. There’s also a ‘web clipping’ tool, available as a Firefox plug-in, which lets you quickly grab web pages as you browse and save them to Evernote.

All in all, Evernote is a powerful productivity app that ensures you’re never far away from your important information.

Photoshop.com Mobile 1.1.0.21-Photoshop comes to iPhone

Adobe Photoshop was traditionally reserved for the likes of art and design professionals. These days though it seems like every man, woman and child with a computer dabbles with the software. As if to confirm its place in pop culture, Photoshop now has its own iPhone app, in the shape of Photoshop.com Mobile.

In truth, this app is an extremely watered-down version of Photoshop, which is very limited in its functionality. Photoshop.com Mobile allows you to perform basic image editing tasks, giving you the option to select a photo from your iPhone, or take one using the device’s camera.

You’ll find four drop-down menus at the top of the Photoshop.com Mobile interface, from where you can access the editing tools. The first is for cropping, rotating and flipping images; the second lets you tweak exposure, saturation, tint and black and white settings; the third applies sketch or soft focus effects; and the final menu lets you choose from a variety of special effects. These effects include Rainbow, Border, Pop, and more.

As you’ll probably be thinking by now, this isn’t exactly a powerful array of tools. Well, it’s not, but then Photoshop.com Mobile is really just designed for quick photo editing on the move. If viewed in this way, it’s actually a great success because the user interface is just so intuitive. The app makes intelligent use of the iPhones touch technology. For example, Saturation and Exposure editing requires you to swipe across the screen to increase the intensity of the effect. Meanwhile, rotating and flipping is done by manipulating the image with your finger. Weirdly though, you can’t pinch the screen to zoom into a photo. In fact, there’s no zoom at all.

What’s great about Photoshop.com Mobile is that once you’ve finished capturing and editing your pictures, you can quickly put them up online via the Upload tool. Of course, the catch is that you can only upload to the Photoshop.com site, but it’s worth signing up for because it’s one of the better photo sharing sites out there.

All in all, Photoshop.com Mobile is a decent portable, on-the-fly image editor. Just don’t expect anything more than the most basic of imaging tools.
