I have a couple different headsets. My advice is to ensure that you are purchasing brand new, original Motorola products. The easiest way to do that is to find ones in original Motorola retail packaging. They may cost a little more, but I still found an HS-850 for $35. If you ask me, it’s worth the risk because if you get one that’s refurbished or a knock-off, it probably won’t last. I had one that quit working after a week for no reason. I am, however, very happy with the one I bought in retail packaging, which I am still using.

The only thing that I can add to the the reviews already posted on this device is my own experiences – we ordered 2 of the ‘bulk packaged’ bundles which include the headset and the charger.
Positives:
- No earbud going into the ear – this is a BIG positive because I can’t stand those and, apparently they are not good for you.
- Quick charging.
- Easy to pair – in my case with a Razr and a Blackberry.
- Easy to turn on/off, by simply folding/unfolding the microphone boom.
- Pretty good instructions.
Negatives:
- My wife complains that the sound quality is not always perfect.
- Being as small as it is, perhaps some carrying pouch should have been included.
- The charging interface is not a mini-USB but some weird, proprietary plug.
- If there is a way to attach this to the left ear, I am not aware of it.
At this time, my wife decided to keep hers but she will give the second one to her girlfriend as a birthday present

This is my second model 850. It’s a decent product, and performs well. I wish there was more metal in it, to make it hold up to being tossed in pockets and in briefcases, etc. So I work hard to protect it. But it works well and the battery lasts as long as my phone does, so no complaints.

There are lighter bluetooth headsets on the market, but most of them are more expensive, less comfortable, and easier to lose than to use. I’ve tried the earlier Motorola, the S9 ROKR, a Jabra and one of the “wire hook with tiny peg for the ear” models, and this one is my favorite. Is it bigger than most bluetooth headsets? Yes, but still tiny enough to conceal in the palm of your hand. It it heavier than newer sets? Not by very much.
What puts the HS850 ahead of the others I’ve tried is this: it’s comfortable. There’s something about the ear hook’s texture that is exactly what the human ear needs. It has a hard plastic arch along the outer edge to hold it steady, and the soft arm feels almost exactly like the cartilage your ear is made from. It’s perfect in that it holds fairly tight but doesn’t make your skin heat up and throb after an hour with it on. Buttons for volume are easy to access and powering the unit on is as simple as flipping open the mic arm…this also means it’s harder to accidentally leave turned on, or to forget to turn the unit off.
Battery life is fairly strong in that you can talk steadily for two hours and still have time left over for a phone call or two before having to charge. Charging is also fairly quick, often completing fully in less than an hour. However, charging is the real weak spot of this headset. First, there isn’t really much of a warning when the battery is low. The lights don’t seem to provide me with any idea, and once the unit starts softly beeping in my ear, I usually only have a minute or two left to shut it off. Second, the connector for the charger is difficult to use: the release button needs to face the underside, and you have to pinch hard to get the release to let go when charging is done.
This isn’t the most elegant of headsets, but if you prefer quality to style, you can’t go wrong. I’ve purchased more than one headset in this series and will probably still do so again if I need a new one.

I would have to say that I received my order very quickly. My only problem is that if i’m using the headset the person on the other line can’t hear me that well.
