A while back I needed to save a sound byte from a DVD for a video project I was working on in iMovie. I thought this would be pretty simple but soon found out that it wasn’t. Thinking that QuickTime would surely feature a decent audio recording function, I was frustrated to discover that you [...]

Treasure Reef 1.00 (BB) – Dive for pearls in this amusing game
November 24th, 2008
Phones Latest software reviews (Phones): Softonic
If you’ve always dreamed of becoming the next Jacques Costeau but don’t live anywhere near the sea then get hold of Treasure Reef and take to the depths.
Treasure Reef is a fun adventure in which you play the part of a diver searching for pearls under the sea. The story revolves around a pirate ship that sunk spilling its bounty of ten giant pearls. Plus there’s the rumor of a mystery treasure.
You must first direct a speedboat over the ocean steering between rocks and islands to find good diving spots. There is not actually much skill involved in this. Just drive around a bit and wait for the screen to freeze and darken. This means you’re over a pearl. Then the game switches to diving mode.
Before you play you can choose between two methods of diving, straight down or four way swimming. The pearl lies underneath you and, armed with a gun you must fish it from the bottom. When sharks appear just shoot them – they don’t die, so it’s very fish friendly.
Treasure Reef is good fun for a while, although it quickly becomes repetitive.

Addled 1.0 – Block-pushing puzzle game
November 24th, 2008
Phones Latest software reviews (Phones): Softonic
Many things in life look very simple on the surface of it but in reality turn out to be much more difficult than you thought.
Addled provides a great example of this. On the surface, it’s just a puzzle game where you need to push matching colored boxes together. In reality it’s a brain-twisting nightmare that will cause you hours of torment.
The reason Addled is so difficult is that you can only drag the blocks left or right and drop them off ledges. Once they’ve fallen there’s no way to push them back up again. What’s more, there are special types of blocks such as ice or fire that make things even trickier.
If you like a good challenge then you’ll enjoy Addled as there are 200 levels of brain-teasing block building to get through (just 20 in this demo version). It’s not particularly impressive in terms of its graphics, but the soothing classical music that plays in the background helps to keep your stress levels down on the particularly fiendish levels.
One thing is for sure – you won’t be finishing Addled in a hurry!

Handy Calculator 1.2 – Simple but functional calculator
November 23rd, 2008
Phones Latest software reviews (Phones): Softonic
More often than not calculators on mobile phones are a little frustrating. They are either too simplistic offering very basic functions or they are so advanced it takes a few years at university to be able to press all the buttons in the right order. What I’ve always wanted is a middle solution, and you know what? I think I’ve found it.
Handy Calculator gives you all the functionality you need but without a worrying array of symbols. It has all the basics, of course, but presented nicely in the centre of the screen allowing you to quickly calculate all your mathematical equations using the up, down, left, right and central buttons on your keypad. The software shows a history for up to the last five operations which is useful when you make mistakes, plus even more useful it saves your last 20 results. If you need a quick and reliable calculator, Handy Calculator is a good choice.

If you think you know your way around the World then why not test yourself with Travel Genius?
This mobile quiz game puts you on the spot, with hundreds of questions about countries, cities, seas, flags and sights. Travel Genius poses you a question about a place and you have to locate it by clicking on the relevant grid on the map. In most cases you don’t need to be too specific because the grid squares are quite big, but it can still be quite tough especially on the hardest of the two difficulty levels.
After each level you complete in Travel Genius you will open up new quizzes, all of which are displayed on a bookshelf in the main menu. Your performance is measure in an ‘IQ’ section, where a graph displays your progress over time. Here you can see how your scores match up to the recommended averages for beginner, expert and professional levels. There’s even an online high scores table so you can challenge the rest of the World.
If I was to pick one hole in Travel Genius it would be that same questions come up quite often when you go back and play levels again, which gets quite annoying. Unfortunately the demo version is quite limited and you only get two levels to try out.
But if you want to discover how much you really know about our planet then Travel Genius offers a fun way to do so.
