Ares Galaxy 2.1.1.3035-100% P2P filesharing and nothing more

Bittorrent and Gnutella might be hogging the headlines of the peer to peer (P2P) world, but close behind comes Ares, a successful P2P application that boasts of having its own decentralized network and a simple, quick access interface. Ares spun-off from Gnutella in 2002, and since then has been building a strong and dedicated community of users.

Installing Ares only takes a few minutes and the interface is simple enough that anybody will feel comfortable with it. The new version has a very sleek and dark interface, not unlike that of WMP 11. When you start Ares, it lets you auto scan your PC to find files you might like to share on the network. Beginners will be relieved to know that there is no complex configuration process involved. Once Ares is installed, all you need to do is select the search tab and type the name of the file you want to download. Once it appears, double click on it to begin downloading. You’ll be able to check its progress in the transfer tab. The recent update adds bittorrent support, opening Ares up to loads of new content.

If you enjoy exchanging words with other users, click on the chat tab and connect to one of the thousands of channels available. You can pick up tips on how to use Ares better, ask which files other users recommend or just chit chat about your life in general. You can even insert emoticons into your conversation and keep a list of your favorite chat channels.

Of all the P2P programs, Ares probably features the widest preview screen. You can set it to fit to screen or adjust it to your preference. This is a great way of making sure you’re downloading the right movie or to get a sneak peak at your downloads.

Unlike WinMX or FileNavigator, the two other spin-off Gnutella projects, Ares did not drop into obscurity and unites a flourishing community of users. However, the same old problems usually seem to arise. According to many Ares users the application suffers from constant connectivity troubles making it difficult to properly search for a file or to successfully complete downloads. Others will worry that Ares is a much smaller network than the globally used Gnutella and does not offer quite as much download sources.

Ares is an ambitious project, and the fact that it still remains standing while eDonkey has fallen at the hands of the RIAA, is characteristic of its reliability. Thanks to a strong community of users, a simple interface, a great preview page and multichat service, Ares remains a P2P application of choice for anybody interested into sharing files over the internet.

The ultimate footballware starting XI

Have you ever imagined that software applications were like football players and it was your job to pick the best team? Actually, no, you probably haven’t. Well, anyway that’s exactly the kind of thing us app fans at OnSoftware are thinking about all the time. One of our colleagues at our Spanish sister site, decided [...]

Hamachi 2.0.1.62-Create a safe private network between two computers

The P2P protocol is frequently used to exchange files and other data between users, but some people regard it as quite an insecure method.

If you are too are worried about security when it comes to online transfers, use Hamachi instead. This handy tool lets you connect two computers via the Internet by creating your own private network and protecting it with industry-standard encryption algorithms. This means that your communications will be safe from prying eyes at all times, creating a private channel between both computers.

Hamachi features a simple interface that enables you to create personal safe networks in just a couple of steps. At first sight, it all looks very easy to use. Plus your connection is conveniently protected by an AES-256 algorithm.

Complications arise later on when trying to share files between computers: you’ll have to do it through network sharing on Windows because it’s not a feature Hamachi itself supports. In the end, I have to admit we were unable to share files over Hamachi during our tests – you know how stubborn Windows folder sharing configuration can get. Oh well, at least we could have a chat – a very safe one, of course.

Hamachi is a great solution to establish safe, private P2P connections between two computers; unfortunately it’s not as easy to use as it seems at first sight.

LimeWire Basic 5.3.6-The world’s fastest P2P file-sharing application, updated

This is the review for the latest release of the most popular peer to peer filesharing application. Current LimeWire users will notice the radical redesign, bringing it aesthetically up to date.

Like Vuze before it, LimeWire appears to be encouraging legal downloads with the LimeWire Store. The library is so far a little limited compared to competitor download stores, but we expect this will expand.

Otherwise it’s business as usual on LimeWire, but with a much simplified and cleaner interface. Because it’s a new release, there are still some bugs, but the basic file sharing functions as well as ever. The new design makes scanning your search results much easier, and downloading files is totally intuitive.

The inbuilt player is still unintrusive and useful for checking audio and video files, but no more. LimeWire goes out of it’s way to check you are aware of the legal implications of illegal filesharing, on installation you have to agree no to infringe copyright, and if you download a file for which LimeWire can’t find a license you will be warned and can stop or continue at your discretion.

The friends function has been much improved. You can sign in with your Gmail, Jabber or LiveJournal accounts, and share files between any of your friends there who are also on LimeWire. This is much easier than tapping out IP addresses, and if enough of your friends use LimeWire, it could become great community sharing tool.

LimeWire searches remain within the P2P network, but you can open torrent files with it, and it functions very well as a torrent download client. This is not the most advertised feature of LimeWire, which may a way of keeping legal challenges at bay, but it’s a shame that you can’t search for torrents within the program.

The official release of LimeWire 5.0 makes for a much improved P2P experience.

Pirates of freedom or fraud?

It’s ironic that Sweden, a country renowned for it’s law abiding citizens, has recently become the centre of a huge trial over the legality of P2P downloading. The Pirate Bay, one of the biggest torrent hosting sites in the world, was setup by four Swedes committed to the spirit of freedom of information and sharing [...]

Top software at CES 2009

It may only be half way through, but the Consumer Electronics Show 2009 in Las Vegas has already sprung surprises in the software sphere. After a disappointing showing from Apple at MacWorld earlier in the week, CES has injected some much-needed optimism into the tech community. Those worried that these troubling economic times would spark [...]

TvAnts 1.0.0.59.0835-Watch TV channels from around the world on your PC

As the world of P2P TV continues its expansion, new kid on the block is TV Ants. The increasing unreliability of its Chinese cousin PPLive means that increasing numbers of users are changing to this simple but highly effective alternative.

The installation is fortunately pretty simple as everything is in Japanese – it’s simply a case of clicking on “Ok” a few times and away you go. The channel list appears in a simple window and you can reveal more by clicking “Renew”. The channel list is a bizarre mix of Japanese, public and private channels. If you want to find out how American troops keep up their morale in Iraq, check out “TV Pentagon” (the US army’s official channel) or if you’re looking for something a bit more scenic, there’s “TV Canada Tourism”.

Streaming is steady once it gets going and image quality is as good as anything you’ll get on PPLive. There are literally hundreds of channels to choose from although most are obviously of little interest to English viewers. The program is actually a project of Zhejiang University hence the plethora of mainly Asian channels. Its popularity lies in the fact that like most P2P TV apps, the channels broadcast live European football much to the chagrin of the The Premiership, La Liga, Sky Sports, etc.

Other channels include music, movies, news and fashion, mostly from Asian sources. Most of this can be found on Shanghai TV, Gungdong TV and Goal TV. Schedules can be found on various P2P forums around the net such as Free Football and you’ll certainly need them to get the most out of TV Ants.

Limewire makes sharing sociable

Sharing music is something I’ve always done, but I have to admit that the internet has made the experience a bit cold. It’s easy, sure, but not as personal as in the past when it was all about giving each other cassettes. P2P file sharing is impersonal at best, and obviously has legal “issues” when [...]

Joost relaunch favours Flash over client

It’s no secret that Joost hasn’t been the success story its makers intended and so it seems they’ve decided to relaunch the TV app without the client. Yes, from now on Joost have announced they are a web-only application which doesn’t require any client download like before.
The main changes are that Joost now uses Adobe [...]

Sopcast v TVAnts

If you were to fix up the heavyweight P2P TV battle of the World and then watch them smash each other’s brains out, then you’d surely have to go for Sopcast and TVAnts – two monsters of the P2P ring. I’ve probably come to rely on both of these two applications more than my TV [...]
