Bejeweled 2 1.30-More Bejeweled than ever!

Games for mobile devices come in a wide range of styles. While many are effective ‘ports’ (or copies) from more mainstream gaming platforms, shrunken down to match small screens, lots are invented especially for PDAs and feature gameplay elements and features which really make the most of what small devices have to offer.

Bejeweled 2 is one such game. Built specifically for Pocket PCs and PalmOS PDAs, this impressive game features outstanding gameplay, beautiful graphics and guaranteed stability, even on slower devices. The object of Bejeweled 2 is simple. Swap neighboring jewels to create lines of three which are then eliminated, only to be replaced by the jewels above them. Wisely avoiding a complex gameplay style, all operations are performed with the stylus (a far better control method than the joystick on Pocket PCs).

When you start a game of Bejeweled 2, you’re given brief instructions and reminders for how to obtain your goal. If you’re stuck and can’t find any jewels to swap, Bejeweled 2 will notice and after several seconds of inactivity it gives you a small prompt as to which jewel you should try swapping. This feature is perfect for beginners and can be easily switched off from the main menu.

Bejeweled 2 offers four distinct game modes, each of which is playable in the excellent trial version we used for this review. ‘Classic’ and ‘Action’ modes are similar, except that ‘Action’ play includes a dynamic time-bar which you have to keep from running out. ‘Puzzle’ mode offers a series of increasingly difficult set-piece puzzles which you have to complete in order to unlock higher levels. ‘Endless’ mode is, as the name eloquently suggests, Bejeweled 2 without end: with no target or time limit, this is perfect for players who are looking for a couple of minutes’ game time. Bejeweled 2 also features a screensaver which can be set to display a series of the stunning game backgrounds, along with time and battery data.

While Bejeweled 2’s gameplay is excellent, its graphics are the key to what makes this game really enjoyable. From the already mentioned background images to special effects on individual jewels, Bejeweled 2 has been designed to constantly impress. Rich sound effects and a tuneful soundtrack make the experience complete. Graphics, sound and music can all be controlled from the Options menu, but we found that the more intensive settings didn’t cause any problems on slower test devices.

Bejeweled 2 is, if you like, that rare gem of PDA games. Original, stylishly designed, easy to pick up and highly addictive, it will enchant beginners and keep more experienced players entertained for weeks and months. If you have one game on your Pocket PC, let it be Bejeweled 2!

Apple’s iPhone Moves, Palm Pre Selling Well?, Bing vs. Yahoo, Windows 7 Details, and more…

The 10 worst tech ads of all time

I’m more than a little excited about the launch of the Palm Pre this weekend. However, I’ve just watched the commercial for the new wonder phone and it’s almost made me not want to buy the device on principle. It’s got to be one of the corniest ads I’ve ever seen – it says nothing [...]

SmartMovie 4.15-Practical video converter and viewer

As handheld devices become faster and more powerful, portable video is starting to look pretty good. Most Pocket PCs, Palm PDAs and plenty of mobile phones are now capable of playing movie files but due to format and storage restrictions, video clips need to be converted before they’re transferred to your chosen device.

This is where SmartMovie comes in. This popular and handy application includes all the tools you might need to have that music video, film or home-movie playing on your handheld device in a couple of minutes. Videos might well need to be re-formatted and/or cropped, as well as having their quality and display size reduced to save on space. SmartMovie can perform all of these tasks with ease, and without too much trouble on your part.

We found that in terms of its basic functions, SmartMovie works admirably well. Despite an unattractive and cluttered user-interface, opening and working with video files ran pretty smoothly. Until, that is, we tried to open movies made with Apple’s .mov extension.

A problem with video codecs meant that we couldn’t work with .mov files until we downloaded some 3rd party software from websites we weren’t familiar with. Clearly, there are a range of copyright issues which may prevent Lonely Cat Games from bundling codecs with their software. SmartMovie was helpful in advising us to download new codecs as well as providing a link to the download page for various codec packs. Once we’d installed a couple of these packs, the .mov files opened without any bother.

Another small issue we observed was short sound glitches each time we opened a video file. While not a serious problem, errors like this give users a bad impression of the software which is, in SmartMovie’s case, undeserved. This program’s range of features and options for resizing and cropping movies as well as altering their frequency and bit-rate is impressive, if a little daunting. The well implemented ‘context help’ feature proved to be a really useful feature in itself, simply explaining the functions of each tool.

SmartMovie, for its general success in shrinking and chopping your movie files, ranks well among its competitors in the video conversion market. But its ugly design and small annoyances let it down somewhat, meaning that though we’ll probably continue using this program, we’ll definitely be keeping our eyes open for a decent (and ideally free) competitor.

Facebook for Windows Mobile 1.0.0.7-The social networking site in the palm of your hand

There are some of us who find it impossible to stray away from Facebook for even a few hours for fear of missing out on all the social fun and games. For these people, this Windows Mobile app represents an indispensable companion.

Facebook for Windows Mobile acts as a scaled-down, pocket-sized edition of the social network. Although it doesn’t contain all the bells and whistles of the bloated Web-based version, you could argue that this version of Facebook is even better than the real thing. You won’t be able to access advanced features, run applications, or use the instant messenger, but the scaled-down interface cuts out a lot of the crap (including ads) that has come to distract from the task of checking how your friends are doing.

The user interface houses a toolbar with five icons – Home, Profile, Friends, Messages, and Phonebook. The ‘Home’ section allows you to view either the news feed (your friend’s status updates, wall posts, photos, events, etc.), or just status updates.

The ‘Profile’ tab gives you a clean breakdown of your latest wall posts, personal info and photos. Again, all of these can be viewed separately using the tabs at the top. ‘Friends’ lets you scroll through your list of Facebook buddies or search for a name. You can open a friend’s profile just by clicking on their face. The ‘Messages’ tab shows you all of your sent and received mail.

One of my favorite things about Facebook for Windows Mobile is the ‘Phonebook’ section. Select the phone icon and it will display an A-Z list of all the Facebook contacts who have registered their phone number on the site. You can then call any of these with a simple tap. Unfortunately, there’s no way of exporting these contact details to your phone’s contacts book though.

Another great thing about the app is the ease in which it lets you add photos and videos to Facebook, giving you the option to capture/record a video or photo before sending it, or grab an existing image or video from your device. I also liked the full screen photo viewer in the program, although pictures can be a little slow to load.

If you want to be connected to Facebook at all times, I can’t recommend Facebook for Windows Mobile highly enough.

What will Apple announce at WWDC in June?

What are we expecting from the Worldwide Developers Conference in June? Lots of people are predicting that Palm will launch their much hyped Pre handset on June 7th, just a day before the Apple conference begins. Maybe Palm are hoping to overshadow any Apple announcements, but that looks dangerous to me, as Apple are likely [...]

Heat Pad 1.1-Your very own heat sensor in the palm of your hand

If you’ve ever seen the film Predator then you’ll know just how cool and useful a heat sensor can be.

Heat Pad turns your iPhone into your very own warmth-sensing contraption. Or should I say it ‘simulates’ a heat sensor because, of course, the iPhone doesn’t come with this function built into it. Instead, Heat Pad simply monitors where your hand is using the touchscreen then changes the color of the display depending on the length of time it’s on there for.

There are three types of surface to choose from in Heat Pad. The first, ‘Heat’, is the regular, Predator-style heat sensor, the ‘Flame’ puts fire at your fingertips, and ‘Fantasy’ produces a weird psychedelic effect. You can also adjust sensitivity and inertia settings to vary the way Heat Pad reflects your movements.

Heat Pad is certainly fun to play around with and is strangely relaxing for a while. It does get a bit boring after a while though.

Install Heat Pad is you want to trick your friends into thinking you’ve unlocked a cool new feature in the iPhone. Then uninstall it a few minutes after.
