Palringo 1.1-A handy cross-platform IM client

I don’t like IM clients that much myself, but I know people who are technically addicted to them. If you fall on this category, you need an app like Palringo.

Palringo is a handy instant messaging thanks to which you’ll be permanently connected to your friends wherever you are. Also, as it’s a cross-platform client, Palringo lets you log on to different networks at the same time (Live Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, Google Talk and more) and chat with all your contacts, no matter what network they belong to.

The good thing about Palringo is that it’s not limited to text messages. You can also send pictures and recorded messages to your contacts, thus enriching your chats with multimedia elements. The only drawback is that they’re not really sent to the device, but uploaded to the Palringo website, where you can check them out via the link you receive.

Generally speaking, Palringo is a bit short of options. It features just the necessary tools to add new networks and contacts, set your status and chat with friends, nothing else. In any case it’s a handy tool to keep in touch with friends from any place in the world, as long as there’s 3G coverage or a Wifi spot available nearby.

If you can’t stand being without your IM buddies for more than a few hours, install Palringo on your phone and you’ll be able to chat with them anywhere.

Nokia Maps 3.0 Beta 5-Find your way around with Nokia’s powerful map tool

Finding your way around using your mobile phone is getting easier all the time, and the powerful new Nokia Maps 3.0 Beta represents the cutting edge of cellphone-based navigation.

The aim of Nokia Maps 3.0 is an ambitious one – to offer a comprehensive and accurate guide to the real world combined with the ability to share location-related content online. Though still in Beta release and only available on a limited number of handsets, Nokia Maps 3.0 represents a major breakthrough in the world of mobile navigation.

The software features some pretty major updates to version 2.0. Besides an overall improvement in map detail and quality, Nokia Maps boasts impressive new 3D features, including three-dimensional terrain and a 3D landmarks feature for more than 200 cities. This allows you to view major buildings and attractions of a city like never before, giving you 360-degree views in 3D.

Other improvements to Nokia Maps include enhanced pedestrian navigation complete with shortcuts through parks and squares, high-res aerial images for satellite and hybrid modes, and train route maps. Drivers will love the new car navigation features, which include details of speed limits, real-time traffic information, and lane assistance.

Perhaps the most significant feature of Nokia Maps 3.0 Beta is its integration with Ovi by Nokia. Maps are now available via the company’s online service, where they can be browsed, shared, favorited, and synchronized.

Because Nokia Maps 3.0 is still in Beta it’s a little unstable, but if you’re lucky enough to have one of the devices supported by the app, it represents an essential tool for getting around town.

Seagulls – Apply a nautical theme to your phone

I like nothing better than relaxing near the coast, but unfortunately working in the city means I don’t get to breath sea air too often. Thankfully, you can bring a taste of the ocean to your phone thanks to this Seagulls theme.

Seagulls is actually a very accomplished theme, complete with a well-drawn vector image of seagulls gliding above the ways. The shades of blue used here are really tranquil, and it makes for something soothing to look at on a busy day.

Combine this smart background with some classy changes to the menus, calendar and system clock display, and you have a stylish theme to brighten up your day.

Apple Theme-Turn your phone into a Mac wonderland

Personally, I reckon that the Mac is the coolest OS on the planet, and by installing this Apple Theme on your Series 60 phone, you can celebrate its beauty wherever you go.

The Apple Theme changes the appearance of a range of different interface elements. The first thing you’ll notice is the cool glowing Apple logo and blue luminous swirls that adorn the main screen. What’s curious is that this wallpaper changes when you access the main menu, to a giant Apple logo with a blue outline.

Other changes that the Apple Theme applies to your phone, include the addition of a cool Apple logo clock, plus a set of start page and main menu icons based on the logo. Text used on the main menu is a bright blue color which looks great against the black background.

Unfortunately, the Apple Theme doesn’t change all of the menu text, which remains black. And, as we know, black text against a black background equals one of the worst design mistakes you can make.

If you can live with the problem of not being able to see some of the menu text, then this Apple theme offers a good way to celebrate your love of Mac.

Bankarama 2.5 (BB)-Manage your finances on your Blackberry

If you’re the sort of person who is always getting in financial pickles then maybe it’s time you invested in an application to help you take control of your money.

Bankarama is a simple finance manager that allows you to keep track of your day-to-day expenses on the go, via your mobile phone.

The program is very useful, for example, for keeping a record of all the movements that occur during a month, helping you identify your most important costs. You can then use this data to execute a series of actions that will streamline all of your outgoings.

Registering a new expense record is pretty straightforward. You simply need to create a new record, select a category and enter an amount. Among the options at your disposal, you can create a list of predefined expenses, list all expenses chronologically, make a simple check of remaining funds, among other possibilities.

Unfortunately, there’s no facility for linking up with live account data online, but for performing simple housekeeping tasks, Banakarama does a pretty good job.

EasyWriter 1.0-Write emails quicker and more accurately

Composing emails and text messages on the iPhone is quicker than it is on most other mobile devices – but it’s far from perfect.

If you’re fed up with the rather fiddly text entry keypad on the iPhone then you might want to give EasyWriter a try. The app is designed to help you write emails faster and more accurately by using the iPhone’s keyboard in landscape mode.

In order to activate the feature, you simply launch EasyWriter, and tilt the screen. The keyboard will then automatically be switched to landscape mode. It genuinely does make a difference to typing speeds too. In my tests, I found the landscape mode in EasyWriter to be about 30 seconds faster at writing a three-sentence email than the standard portrait aspect keyboard.

Another great thing about EasyWriter is the way you can zoom in and out of text simply by pinching the screen, making it great for viewing long emails on a single screen.

EasyWriter saves the text that you’re writing, so even if you receive a call or a message, you won’t lose your draft. Once you’ve finished typing your message, you just hit ‘Send to Mail’ and choose your email provider. Your text will then be inserted automatically as a new message ready for sending.

EasyWriter certainly provides a much quicker way of typing than the standard iPhone keypad, although integration with your email service is still a little cumbersome.

MusAic 1.2.4-One-click ringtone composition program

I don’t know about you, but I get fed up with the same old ringtones on my phone. Even when I download tones based on well-known tracks I still get irritated after three or four calls.

MusAic is designed to change all that, offering you a way to always ensure you have fresh new tones, while promoting your creativity at the same time. The program allows you to create polyphonic music in any genre using Artificial Intelligence algorithms.

Don’t worry, you don’t need to be Mozart in order to compose a beautiful ringtone in MusAic. In fact, you don’t really need any musical knowledge because the system is largely automated. All you have to is choose a style of music and adjust the ‘width’ of it using the appropriate sliders, which will automatically generate an original polyphonic ringtone. You can then rate this ditty using another slider. Over time, as you create and rate different tunes, MusAic will start to learn the kind of music you like and will generate similar tones in future.

Once you get used to the rather clunky interface (which is skinable, incidentally), you’ll find it pretty easy to start making tunes. You can even export them as MIDI files if you wish. The main problem I had with MusAic though is that it really doesn’t feel like you’re in control of what you’re creating, because all your basically doing is adjusting a couple of slide bars and the software does the rest.

MusAic is fun and easy to use, but ultimately doesn’t give you a great deal of creative input.
