5 neat ways to use Bluetooth on your phone

Many of the new phones that come out these days are equipped with Bluetooth capabilities. So if you’ve bought a mobile within the last year or so chances are you have it on your device (to find out just look for the little blue icon shown here). But how many times have you actually done anything with Bluetooth? Do you even really know what you can do with Bluetooth? Well, it’s high time you started exploring the capabilities of this wireless technology because you can have a lot of fun with it, as well as saving yourself time and money. Here are some of the neat things you can do using Bluetooth on your phone.

Play games

Many mobile games these days allow you to play remotely against your buddies over Bluetooth. It makes for a much faster and cheaper solution than playing over the Internet. It’s particularly suitable for turn-based games such as pool (try Mobile VR Pool or Pool for UIQ); darts (3D Lawn Darts or Power Dart); or racing games like MGS Karting and V-Rally.

Chat

Obviously phones are specifically designed for chatting, but speaking into the receiver or sending an SMS is not always necessarily the best way of doing it. Applications such as BuZZone, SYMBTChat or Bluetooth Chat allow you to communicate via text messaging without paying for it!If you’re interested then have a look at the post I wrote earlier this year explaining how to chat via Bluetooth.

Sharing stuff

One of the most common uses for Bluetooth this one, and you may have even tried it yourself. Bluetooth makes it dead easy to quickly share a photo, ringtone, video or any other kind of file with your pals. Most devices make this a very simply procedure and you’ll normally find an option to ’send via Bluetooth’ with any multimedia you have stored. If you’re having difficulties, try installing a mobile file manager such as Resco Explorer to facilitate more seamless sharing.

Remote control

Another cool thing you can do with a Bluetooth-enabled phone is rig it up to your PC or Mac and use it to control your computer. For instance, Bluetooth Remote Control allows you issue commands to apps such as Winamp, Windows Media Player and Powerpoint, using your Windows Mobile device. Other apps that do something similar include Smart Remote and irRemote Control.

Avoid people

If you’re anything like me then you hate bumping into people you don’t like in the street and being forced to make chit-chat. Thanks to the power of Bluetooth you can detect and avoid anyone you don’t want to come across. Turn your iPod Touch into a phone for free

Ever dreamed of using your iPod Touch as a mobile phone? Sounds impossible but the developers at TruPhone have developed a way to do so that may signal the end for your mobile phone – well sort of.

TruPhone is a free application that utilise the internet via a wi-fi connection to give you cheap phonecalls in much the same way as Skype does. Truphone for iPod Touch allows iPod Touch users to call each other for free and also those using the iTunes App Store. According to the the TruPhone blog, the app will also soon be able to call landlines for free, Skype and even MSN contacts.

Nokia’s world of fascinating facts

This week’s Nokia World 08 event in Barcelona was dominated by mass fawning over the company’s great new N97 device. The stunning announcement has meant that some of the other interesting stuff to come out of the event may have passed some people by. For instance, the Finnish phone giant announced a major update to its Nokia Maps product, closed on its deal to purchase the Symbian Foundation, and released a funky-looking Home Music Internet radio.

Aside from this, sitting in on the keynotes, Q&As and seminars at the event, we were privy to some real eye-opening and thought provoking tit-bits of information about the mobile and Internet industry. While we can’t vouch for the credibility of all of these facts and bits of trivia, it’s a good example of how the speech-givers managed to prick up the ears of an audience who were preoccupied by daydreams of owning an N97.

Nokia Maps promises to be the mobile solution to navigating around the world and with free maps for 150 countries they could be right. In terms of content Nokia Maps has a lot to get excited about. Of course it provides a comprehensive routefinder facility whether you want to get from street-to-street, city-to-city, or country-to-country. But more than that, with Nokia Maps you can locate 15 million tourist spots meaning when you’re in a new city the software will give you directions from wherever you are, telling you exactly how far you need to travel.

You can share these with friends and update and personalise your maps. It will work with GPS if your phone supports it. All you need to do to use the software is upload a city map onto your mobile and select what you want to search for eg hotels or restaurants. Then follow the route. One problem is that if want to create more detailed guides or add extras such as a voice-operated navigation guide you will need to pay. And it may even cost you to transfer free maps depending on your service provider, so do check. Nokia Maps is a very good starter package though.

Take action on global poverty

You may not be aware of it, but today is Blog Action Day. This is an annual event (in its second year) designed to get bloggers of the World to unite and create debate over the issues and solutions to global poverty. It’s definitely a noble cause, and with 11,000 blogs taking part it could be something that really helps to make a difference. I’m not going to write a post about how we can end poverty for the simple reason that I don’t know how we can. Unfortunately, it seems the vast majority of the 11,000 bloggers posting about the subject on Blog Action Day don’t either.

Don’t get me wrong, these people mean well, but most of the posts I read were along the lines of: “yes, let’s all stop for a minute and think about how lucky we are”, “let’s pray for the starving Africans”, or teeing up facts like “did you know that only 6% of the World’s population own 56% of the money?”. While noble in their aims, few of the posts I read even began to make suggestions as to how we can stop global poverty, which is a shame because surely the one thing a Blog Action Day really needs is some “action”. Surfing around some of the sites I did manage to unearth a handful of constructive tips for easing poverty in a practical way. Here are my top five, all of which can be done right now:

Wheelie Catholic: Dig out old clothes and food cans and take them down to your local food bank
kelpenhagen: Use a micro-lending service like Kiva, which help businesses in poor areas
Dell Your Blog: Donate your old cellphones to people in poverty-stricken villages
The Warning Knock: Sponsor a child or a family living in poverty
writer’s flow: Stop throwing your old stuff away
Actually, I will add one action point of my own after all: Download and use AidMaker, a piece of software that donates money to poverty charities whenever you shop online
