qeep 1.98-Join the exciting qeep social network

Many of us use our phones to keep in touch with our buddies on Facebook, Twitter or other networks we belong to. There are, however, a growing number of social networks designed specifically for mobile users – and queep is one of the best.

qeep is a free mobile application that connects you with your friends and allows you to make new ones online. It acts like a normal social network in the way you can view profiles, exchange messages, play games, ‘nudge’ people, etc. One of the main benefits of qeep is the fact that it’s much cheaper to send a mail through the service (called a ‘QMS’) than it is to send a regular SMS message (if, of course, you have a cheap data plan).

I was impressed by the speed in which you can get up and running with qeep. You just need to choose a username and a password to get started. Your profile information, photo and personal data can be entered at your leisure and you can start using the qeep network without it.

The qeep interface is nicely laid-out (if you excuse the rather garish purple and green color scheme), and all of the things you can do are displayed neatly on the Homepage. From here you can invite friends, view qeepers who are currently online, view photoblogs and read the big pinboard.

Photoblogs and the pinboard are perhaps the two most interesting aspects of qeep. The photoblogging function allows you to quickly upload a picture you’ve just taken on your device’s camera or one stored in the memory, and add text to it. Your photoblog will then be available for everyone else in the qeep community to see. A word of warning about this service though: not all of the photobloggers on the site are using it for innocently putting up pictures of their pets or great landscapes they’ve just seen. Let’s just say there seem to be a lot of pretty ‘liberal’ qeepers out there.

The ‘pinboard’ function in qeep is a Twitter-style feature, whereby you can quickly jot down some text explaining what you’re up to and your friends and other users can come along and view it. Another funny feature (if somewhat childish) is qeep’s ‘sound alerts’, which are funny noises or phrases that you can send to a friend to listen to.

queep is a very well-implemented social networking service for mobile phones. Like most social networks though, it generally attracts a certain type of person. And as a result your enjoyment of it depends on who you are. qeep feels very much like it’s aimed at teenagers or young-adults, preferably with an open mind.

If this sounds like you, then qeep is well worth installing on your phone.

eBuddy Mobile Messenger 1.2 for Nokia-Multi-network instant messaging on your mobile

Got cheap, flat-rate Internet access on your phone? Then make sure you install an instant messaging client on your device. It’s quicker than exchanging SMS messages and can work out cheaper than making phone calls.

If you already use instant messaging or chat services on your PC then you can use the same accounts on your phone. Probably the best way to do it is to install a multi-network chat client, such as eBuddy Mobile Messenger. The program pulls all your IM accounts into one, allowing you to view everyone who is online and chat to them, no matter which service they’re using. eBuddy Mobile Messenger currently supports: MSN, Yahoo!, AIM, Google Talk, ICQ, and Facebook.

After installing the app on your phone, you’ll be prompted to sign up for a free eBuddy account. After you’ve completed the short registration process you’re ready to start importing your contacts from your various IM and social networks, which you do just by signing into them all from within eBuddy Mobile Messenger.

When you’re all set up, you’ll see a list of all your online and offline contacts in the main window. Starting a conversation is merely a case of clicking ‘Chat’ to launch a new chat tab. eBuddy has a number of neat chat options, including the ability to send a picture directly from your phone’s camera, insert quicktext from a list of (editable) common phrases, view profile, and add emoticons. On the latter point, the preset emoticons within eBuddy Mobile Messenger are pretty basic. You can download new ones from eBuddy, but not that many.

eBuddy Mobile Messenger comes with a tidy, colorful user interface which is a pleasure to use. The use of tabs helps to keep the screen clutter-free and makes everything clearly visible.

eBuddy is great at what it does, but it’s a shame it doesn’t go quite as far as the likes of Nimbuzz or fring, which both offer VoIP as well as text chat. Even to have Skype text chat would’ve been a nice addition.

If all you want to do is send instant messages though, eBuddy Mobile Messenger makes it quick and easy to chat across different IM networks.

Concise Oxford Spanish Dictionary 4.10 (S60)-The best Spanish dictionary now on your S60 cellphone

These days, travelling for business or pleasure can often mean that you speak English all the way because so many people understand it. However, you’ll often find that making an effort to use the local language, whether to seal the deal or just to order a coffee, can make a big difference in the way people welcome you.

The Concise Oxford English Dictionary from Mobile Systems is a tool that can help you if you’ve already made the effort to learn some Spanish beforehand. It’s not a traveller’s phrase-book but it does contain precise translations for more than 170,000 words and phrases, all in a simple and easy-to-use interface which guarantees instant results.

The way that the dictionary is presented makes it easy to locate the info you’re looking for. Its default start-up screen is a list of the first half-dozen or so words beginning with ‘A’, and a text box which allows you to start searching for words immediately. We weren’t sure about displaying the full list of words as a default view: how many times will you choose to scroll through the full list rather than searching for your term? But as we typed, the dictionary filtered the words on-screen, narrowing down the choices until there were just a handful to pick from. In the end, we felt that this method of displaying information could well serve as a time-saver, and it’s therefore a must-have feature on any business dictionary.

When you open a specific record for a word, the translation is provided in a clear manner, using variations in font-strength and colour to indicate the various parts of the word’s entry. As well as the traditional Castilian Spanish (from Spain), twenty regional variations are included in the dictionary’s database, meaning that you can safely avoid the embarrassment of misusing Mexican slang in Spain, and vice versa.

Some small gripes included not being able to select terms for cross-referencing within the dictionary, and the lack of more encyclopaedic definitions. However, both these features would have taken up more precious space on your phone’s memory card, a sacrifice which on balance wouldn’t really be justified.

The Concise Oxford Spanish Dictionary is a well designed, simple and easy-to-use tool for English speakers who need a mobile dictionary solution. Automatic updates and a ‘word of the day’ random term option are well executed, handy features which seal the deal on this reviewer’s recommendation.

Translator+ 1.3.7-Text translator with email integration

Do you often have to communicate with people who can’t speak your language? If you do then Translator+ makes for a great addition to your BlackBerry.

Translator+ is an online multi-translation tool that allows you to translate words and phrases between 12 different languages. By performing translations via a server rather than a local database, the program is very powerful, allowing the conversion of even the most unusual words and turns of phrase.

The user interface in Translator+ is clean and easy to navigate, if a little drab. You simply need to select the languages you wish to translate between from the drop-down list, then type the text you wish to translate and hit the ‘Translate’ button. The program’s settings allow you to tick the languages you want to appear in the Direction drop-down menu, making the whole process much quicker.

Another neat thing about Translator+ is the fact that it integrates with your email service, helping you to quickly compose messages in a foreign language.

All in all, Translator+ represents a fast and reliable way to translate text on the go.
