Done Drinking 1.0-Help the tipsy drinker stay on his feet

Most of us have experienced – or at least witnessed – the effects that alcohol can have on a person’s basic ability to stand upright. Done Drinking puts you in the shoes of a guy who has had one two many pints and challenges you to get him home.

Done Drinking makes use of the iPhone’s accelerometer so you can control your drunken bum, Tipsy, simply by tilting the screen from one side to the other. It’s not as easy as it sounds as the bubbles have got to his head and made it virtually impossible for Tipsy to walk in a straight line, so you’ll need to be very precise in your movements. The object is to travel as far as possible without Tipsy falling over. You get three tries and your total distance is recorded in the high scores table.

Done Drinking is good fun to play with funny cartoon graphics and a humorous musical score. However, for me the game is just too repetitive and there aren’t enough elements in it to make it anything other than a brief diversion. There aren’t any levels as such and no obstacles, power-ups or other characters so the action quickly becomes a bit stale.

There are a few options in Done Drinking, such as volume, controls and the units of distance display – but I would’ve liked to have seen a bit more customization here.

Done Drinking is fun for a while, but the amusement soon gives way to fatigue and nausea – much like with booze itself.

White Abstract Flowers Theme (S60 3rd)-Elegant floral theme for your phone

If you want to make your phone look a little more pretty then the White Abstract Flowers theme could be just the ticket.

This elegant Series 60 theme transforms your phone’s home screen with a wallpaper consisting of some beautiful hand-drawn flowers on a white background. The White Abstract Flowers theme also adds a series of new icons to your system’s menus. Although these aren’t hideous, I found them to be a bit drab.

Anyway, if you want a bit of floral decoration for your mobile then the White Abstract Flowers theme is worth a look.

Hexxagon Labs 1.2-Join the hexagons to score points

If you’re a fan of puzzle games and are bored of the same old formats then Hexxagon Labs may make for a refreshing change.

Kind-of an Othello with hexagons, Hexxagon Labs sees you tackle a series of mind-boggling quests over a series of complex levels. The aim of the game is to fill as many of the spaces on the board as possible by moving around strategically and capturing enemy pieces.

It’s pretty straightforward to get a grasp of the rules of Hexxagon Labs if you’ve played Othello before, but if you haven’t then there are a few tutorial levels to help you on your way. It’s all great fun, and the inclusion of scientific facts along the way helps add to the enjoyment factor.

Hexxagon Labs is well presented – the graphics are nice and colorful and the sounds are chirpy if not a little annoying. The only real problem with the game is that there just aren’t enough levels, and the control system is slightly fiddly.

On the whole though, Hexxagon Labs provides a fun way to kill some time.

Silent Christmas Night (S60 3rd) – Tranquil festive theme

If you’ve been enjoying the festive period and never want the Christmas spirit to leave you then perhaps you should install the Silent Christmas Night theme onto your phone.

This seasonal skin transforms your phone with a subtle, stylish and sparkling background wallpaper. The image features a picture of a Christmas tree made out of very small stars. Silent Christmas Night also adds a new analog clock and shortcut menu buttons to your home screen.

That’s not all because the theme also revamps the menus on your S60 device, giving you a smart selection of new icons, which are highlighted with a neat red box when selected. Having said that, none of these icons are themed around Christmas, so if you’re a real die-hard Xmas fan then you might be disappointed.

Silent Christmas Night is definitely one of the more classy and tasteful seasonal themes around.

Free Translator 1.0.7 – Translate to and from a range of languages

If you’ve ever used the Google Translate tool then you’ll know just how great it is for translating text from one language to another.

If you want a slightly more convenient way of using the service on your iPhone then check out Free Translator. The app provides a mobile-optimized interface for Google Translate that makes it much quicker and easier to perform translations.

Once Free Translator is launched you need to click on the source language then select a target language, from the choice of 32. Then, just type in the text you wish to convert and click the ‘Translate’ button for an instant translation. You even get the choice to email the translated text with a single click, making it ideal for writing to foreign friends, colleagues or customers on the fly.

Because it uses the Google translation engine, Free Translator provides fairly accurate and comprehensive results, although, of course, it’s still not perfect. The one major drawback of the program though, is that it requires an Internet connection into order to work. This could make it quite costly unless you have a cheap data plan.

One thing I think that could’ve enhanced the usefulness of Free Translator is some kind of speech feature to help you pronounce words in other language.

Free Translator is useful for anyone who needs to interact in different languages – just watch out for the Internet rates!

Palringo 1.1-A handy cross-platform IM client

I don’t like IM clients that much myself, but I know people who are technically addicted to them. If you fall on this category, you need an app like Palringo.

Palringo is a handy instant messaging thanks to which you’ll be permanently connected to your friends wherever you are. Also, as it’s a cross-platform client, Palringo lets you log on to different networks at the same time (Live Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, Google Talk and more) and chat with all your contacts, no matter what network they belong to.

The good thing about Palringo is that it’s not limited to text messages. You can also send pictures and recorded messages to your contacts, thus enriching your chats with multimedia elements. The only drawback is that they’re not really sent to the device, but uploaded to the Palringo website, where you can check them out via the link you receive.

Generally speaking, Palringo is a bit short of options. It features just the necessary tools to add new networks and contacts, set your status and chat with friends, nothing else. In any case it’s a handy tool to keep in touch with friends from any place in the world, as long as there’s 3G coverage or a Wifi spot available nearby.

If you can’t stand being without your IM buddies for more than a few hours, install Palringo on your phone and you’ll be able to chat with them anywhere.

Nokia Maps 3.0 Beta 5-Find your way around with Nokia’s powerful map tool

Finding your way around using your mobile phone is getting easier all the time, and the powerful new Nokia Maps 3.0 Beta represents the cutting edge of cellphone-based navigation.

The aim of Nokia Maps 3.0 is an ambitious one – to offer a comprehensive and accurate guide to the real world combined with the ability to share location-related content online. Though still in Beta release and only available on a limited number of handsets, Nokia Maps 3.0 represents a major breakthrough in the world of mobile navigation.

The software features some pretty major updates to version 2.0. Besides an overall improvement in map detail and quality, Nokia Maps boasts impressive new 3D features, including three-dimensional terrain and a 3D landmarks feature for more than 200 cities. This allows you to view major buildings and attractions of a city like never before, giving you 360-degree views in 3D.

Other improvements to Nokia Maps include enhanced pedestrian navigation complete with shortcuts through parks and squares, high-res aerial images for satellite and hybrid modes, and train route maps. Drivers will love the new car navigation features, which include details of speed limits, real-time traffic information, and lane assistance.

Perhaps the most significant feature of Nokia Maps 3.0 Beta is its integration with Ovi by Nokia. Maps are now available via the company’s online service, where they can be browsed, shared, favorited, and synchronized.

Because Nokia Maps 3.0 is still in Beta it’s a little unstable, but if you’re lucky enough to have one of the devices supported by the app, it represents an essential tool for getting around town.
