Make a Facebook app in 30 minutes with Dapper

There is a school of thought which says that if you want to create a Facebook app you need years of coding experience. Not so. Because, although the really fancy dynamic apps do require a lot of PHP knowledge, it is possible to make your own Facebook apps without any scripting whatsoever. In fact, you [...]

Trial mac software – uTorrent for Mac

I’ve been using uTorrent on Windows for years now and so the arrival of uTorrent on the Mac is something that many users, myself included, have long been waiting for. For some reason at the moment, the uTorrent Mac page still says uTorrent for mac is “coming soon” but believe me, the beta version is [...]

Top Firefox add-ons for social networks

I admit it: one of the first things I do in the morning, together with checking my email and reading RSS feeds, is going over my diverse personal profiles in Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites. It’s not until you join a few of them that you start to realize how time-consuming they can [...]

Five great new reasons to switch to Opera

It’s still a mystery to me why more people aren’t using Opera. Users rave about Firefox being the best browser on the market despite the fact that it’s now a bloated monster. Others fawn over Google Chrome even though it makes a mess of many pages due to its poor support for web standards. Even [...]

Snaptu 1.2.6-Quick mobile access to Facebook, Twitter and more

Navigating the Web on a mobile phone has always been a thankless task, but now we’re starting to see more intelligent apps that make it easier to get straight to the content you need.

Snaptu is one such program, giving you free and instant access to some of the Web’s most popular services. From one neat front screen, Snaptu hooks you up with a range of online tools, including Facebook, Twitter, Picasa, movie reviews, RSS feeds, weather, live sports scores, and much more – all of which can be launched simply by clicking on the appropriate icon.

Snaptu is a highly customizable program, allowing you to set up the interface to show only the icons of the services you want to use. Once you’ve entered your log-in details for Facebook, Twitter and Picasa, these are saved, so you can access latest updates, photos, etc. with a single click. Granted, not all of the features from these social networks are available within Snaptu, but it provides a nice way of staying up-to-date while you’re on the move.

Each of the different mini-apps within Snaptu has its own set of options and settings, so you can tweak each one individually to display the particular content you’re interested in. Once thing I found was that many of the apps, such as MyMovies, Cricket Scores, and the pub guide are very UK-centric, so anyone living outside of Great Britain may be disappointed with the lack of relevant content. Hopefully this is something that Snaptu’s developers will address in time.

On the whole though, Snaptu offers a fast and simple way of staying connected to the web content that matters to you.

uTorrent (µTorrent) 1.8.4-Compact BitTorrent client with expansive capabilities

uTorrent has quickly become a favorite among torrent users worldwide thanks to an innovative interface, minute CPU usage and extensive download details.

The program is undoubtedly one of the most reliable torrent clients on the market, thanks to an ultra quick installation process and a minimal use of PC resources. You can have a good number of torrents downloading and still be able to use your PC without suffering any lags.

The interface is simple to use and is divided into the list of torrents and extensive details like peer data, download and upload speeds, file pieces and blocks, or a graph of your current speeds. In an attempt to help you structure all your torrents, the application allows you to set labels to your individual downloads. You can also view the torrents according to whether they are downloading, completed, active or inactive. If you download a good deal of torrents at a time this is a good way of keeping track of the progress of them all. Furthermore, you can easily set up the web interface for uTorrent, which allows you to check your torrents from any PC connected to the internet. All you need is to have one PC taking care of the downloads and set up access to the interface of your uTorrent session.

uTorrent makes it easy for you to look for new downloads without opening up your browser. You can search the main torrent sites by typing the name of the file you are looking for in the box on the top right corner of the interface. uTorrent also includes an RSS downloader to receive feeds of your favourite torrent sites. This little feature is great to check out all new torrents in one click.

The first time you launch uTorrent it lets you check your connection settings online and verify whether your ports are functioning properly. The preferences menu is also replete with tweaking possibilities. You can customize queuing, scheduling and downloading. Setting the location of downloaded files is the only bit that could confuse users as uTorrent makes a difference between new downloads and completed downloads.

You might have guessed it, here at Softonic we have a soft spot for uTorrent. Not only does the mini torrent client use up very little memory, it also comes with loads of information and customization features to make your downloading experience as simple and automated as possible. If you’re tired of the bandwidth hogging Azureus or bored of the basic Bittorrent client, check out uTorrent.

Opera Mini Blackberry 4.2.14912-The Mini revolution in mobile browsing

If you’ve been using Opera Mini on your mobile you’ll know all about the benefits its brings. If not, you really should be using it. It’s the best way to get the most out of your mobile, making surfing the internet fast, secure and easy, plus you can use photo-sharing applications and subscribe to RSS news feeds from your favourite websites or blogs. And now Opera Mini promises to be even better with this new Beta version.

It still has a fast and free internet connection and when you open a webpage Opera Mini will give you a full-screen view and then suggest where to zoom in to begin reading. Of course you can choose yourself if you are looking for something specific. Importantly the software changes the size of the text so you can get as much information on your screen while still being able to read it. This optimization of pages ensures easy reading. You can even flip the screen to landscape mode to get a better view. And you can bookmark in the usual way.

One simple feature I liked was the Opera Mini mouse which allows easy scrolling, an addition that many mobile packages are sorely lacking.

Opera Mini 4.2.14912-The mini revolution in mobile browsing

Opera Mini has long been one of the best ways to view the Web on a small screen device, and now the browser has come to the Android platform.

The slick interface and the speed at which it handles pages makes Opera Mini a wise choice for Android owners. One of the great things about the app is that it automatically resizes pages to suite the size of your display, making it a highly usable solution when compared with other mobile web browsers.

As you’d expect from an Opera browser, Opera Mini is loaded with features, including a powerful bookmark manager, support for RSS feeds, and a zoom in/out function, which is something that’s particularly helpful on a mobile device.

Amazingly, all of these cool add-ons don’t affect the performance of the browser, which remains lightweight and efficient, displaying pages quicker than virtually all of Opera Mini’s rivals.

Aside from the odd bug, Opera Mini is pretty much everything you could want from a mobile Web browser.

Yahoo! 1.1.1-The giant search portal in miniature

Yahoo! is one of the few companies from the early dotcom boom that still dominates the web today. It’s no surprise then, that the firm wants to extend it’s reach onto handheld devices, and has billed Yahoo! for iPhone as ‘ the starting point for mobile Internet’.

The program works in a similar way as the Google Mobile App, in that it acts as a portal not only to the search functionality itself, but also to all the various services and applications that Yahoo! offers. You can use the app as a means of getting straight to the content you are interested in.

Yahoo! Mobile is navigated using a toolbar at the bottom of the interface which houses five tabs. The first, ‘Featured’, shows you a selection of the current featured content from Yahoo!. This includes ‘Today on Yahoo!’, as well as entertainment news and hot searches. This content can be localized to your area via the Settings menu. The second tab, ‘Y! News’, gives you an overview of the main stories of the day. To read the full story you the program will fire up Safari on your iPhone for you to view it.

‘My Interests’ is an interesting feature of Yahoo! for iPhone, whereby you can search for things that interest you, and the app will display various types of content relating to that person, place or thing (web sites, news, RSS, weather, etc.) Alternatively, you can customize it using the ‘Quick Add’ feature to insert channels such as weather, stocks, bookmarks, RSS, and more.

The ‘Connect’ feature in Yahoo! is one thing that stands out above the Google Mobile App. It allows you to assimilate your social networks, so you can track updates from services such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Bebo, MySpace, etc. You just need to enter the logins for all the various accounts once, then Yahoo! for iPhone will update you on friend activity across all these platforms.

The final tab, ‘More’ is similar to the ‘Apps’ section in Google Mobile, and is where you’ll find access to iPhone-tailored versions of things like Yahoo! Messenger, Flickr, Calendar, Finance, etc.

Of course, Yahoo! for iPhone wouldn’t be complete without a search facility, and this one is pretty powerful, with a number of settings for things like SafeSearch. Search Assist, and location awareness. There’s also an integrated voice search, though, like the Google equivalent, this is pretty raw at the moment, and you’ll find yourself constantly shouting the same word into your phone over and over again to get it recognized.

This small-screen friendly version Yahoo! is great for quickly checking what’s happening online. It’s just a bit annoying that you have to leave the app for Safari anytime you want to study content in greater depth.

Space 001: Invaders Screensaver-Mesmerizing Space-themed screensaver

If you’re into all things sci-fi and Outer Space then the Space 001: Invaders Screensaver might interest you.

This hypnotic screensaver contains an animation of a bizarre Space-age scene, which plays while your phone is idle. It’s difficult to make out exactly what the animation is showing, but it seems to be some kind of alien light show in front of a load of planets in orbit.

You’ll need Flash Lite installed on your phone if you want to run Space 001: Invaders Screensaver. The quality of the animation is much smoother than animated GIFs and it’s scalable.

Despite its rather abstract nature, the Space 001: Invaders Screensaver will appeal to those interest in the Universe.
