Evernote 3.0.249-Organize and synchronize everything!

Not all of us have the memory of an Elephant, and if you’re the kind of person who always forgets what you should be doing or where you’re supposed to be going then it’s high time you did something about it.

Evernote is an application and web service that lets you capture, store and synchronize all manner of information on your BlackBerry, PC and online, all at the same time. It allows you to store all manner of items, including text notes, voice notes, images and files.

Once you’ve installed the program on your device, you’ll need to sign up for a free Evernote account. After this short registration process you’ll be presented with a very clear and touch-friendly interface. From here, you’re just a tap away from adding a text note, a handwritten ink note, taking a snapshot on your camera, recording an audio note, or uploading a file. The Settings menu in Evernote allows you to view your current monthly usage, and tweak things such as the camera resolution and the way the notes are displayed on screen.

Now, whenever you don’t have your BlackBerry to hand you’ll be able to access any notes or files you’ve added in Evernote from any web browser. These can then be edited, deleted, printed or emailed at your leisure. Personally, I found the layout of the online interface quite uncomfortable – unlike the handheld version of Evernote, the text is very small, and the strange menu system makes browsing through your items overly complicated.

From the browser-based version of Evernote you can add notes and files like with the device version. There’s also a ‘web clipping’ tool, available as a Firefox plug-in, which lets you quickly grab web pages as you browse and save them to Evernote.

All in all, Evernote is a powerful productivity app that ensures you’re never far away from your important information.

Skype 1.3-Enjoy the wonders of Skype on your iPhone

With almost 500 million registered users, Skype is now biggest carrier of international calls in the World. So, it was only a matter of time before it landed on America’s most popular mobile device, the iPhone.

Skype for iPhone proves to be well worth the wait. The product successfully carries the principles of quick and easy communication across from the desktop to the mobile, allowing users to make free or cheap calls anywhere in the World.

I guess I should start by pointing out that Skype for iPhone does not mean you never need to pay for your mobile phone calls again. You can use it to make free calls over Skype only over WiFi, and SkypeOut calls on 3G to cellphones and landlines using Skype. I think it will be a long time before carriers allow Skype-to-Skype calls over 3G, though.

On to the software then, and I must say I’m mightily impressed with the compact and intuitive user interface of Skype for iPhone. Once you’re signed in, you’re Skype contacts will automatically be displayed on screen in an alphabetized list which is even easier to navigate than the one in the desktop version of the program. You can choose to view all of your contacts, or only the ones who are online.

Click on a contact and their profile page will be loaded, giving you the option to either call them, chat, or view their full profile. The ‘Chat’ option calls up a split-screen where the keyboard is loaded into the bottom half of the screen and IM messages displayed above them. Just like the latest version of Skype on the desktop, these conversations are automatically saved, for referring back to later.

Tapping the ‘Call’ button when a Skype contact is selected will phone the person using VoIP. Once the call is in progress you have four on-screen options available to you for the duration of the conversation. You can choose to mute the microphone, turn on speakerphone, put them on hold, or call up the dialpad.

Calls to regular numbers via SkypeOut can be made by touching the ‘Call’ icon at the bottom of the Skype interface. This brings up a full-screen, finger-friendly dialpad for calling someone, and even lets you browse your iPhone’s contacts. I have to say, the call quality I experienced in testing was excellent, and probably just as good as using Skype on a computer.

Although Skype for iPhone is missing some key functions of its parent app, such as emoticons, SMS support, and video calling there are still several options you can tinker with. For instance, you’re able to edit your profile, uploading a picture you’ve taken on your iPhone if you so wish. You can also activate voicemail, top up your credit, and add status messages from the iPhone client.

If you’re a Skype user with an iPhone then you really can’t afford to ignore this application.

HJSplit 2.4-Easily split and join large files

Since time immemorial, computer users have had problems sharing large files. Whether trying to fit Sim City on floppy disks, uploading binaries to newsgroups or sharing home movies via email, you may well have suffered the inconvenience of a file that’s just too big for what you’re trying to do.

This is where HJSplit comes in. It’s a remarkably simple and easy-to-use little application which can split any file you like into parts of a predefined size, so that sharing them or storing them is made easier. It can also join split files back together and compare parts to see if they’re the same.

Based in just one small executable (there’s no installer for this old school app!), the utility weighs in at a piffling 300kb and doesn’t have the world’s best design. But it works surprisingly well and splits files into chunks of your chosen size, very quickly indeed. Its joining, comparing and MD5 tools all work just as efficiently.

A small but very effective little utility which will split and rejoin any file you like.

Twittix 1.11-Tweet from anywhere using your phone

If, like some folk I know, you can’t bear to be away from your Twitter feed for more than a couple of minutes, then get a load of Twittix.

This streamlined Twitter client for Series 60 is lightweight and easy-to-use, allowing you to quickly check what the people you’re following are doing, but also post your own tweets from wherever you may be.

As I said, Twittix is so simple to use. You just need to enter your username and password to sign in then, within a few seconds, your feed is displayed on screen, allowing you to see what everyone is doing. After reading a tweet you can choose to reply, retweet, forward via SMS, or set as favorite. All these options are available simply by clicking on the tweet.

Of course, Twittix also lets you post your own tweets, which you can do by selecting ‘Create Tweet’ from the ‘Options’ menu. The app also lets you add photos stored on your phone, automatically setting them to Twitpix format and uploading them.

The thing I love most about Twittix is the easy way it lets you navigate through the Timeline, @ messages, Favorites, Followers, Following, Everyone, and Search screens. All you need to do is hit the left and right directional buttons to flick through these various Twitter features. The fact that all these features are even included makes Twittix one of the most advanced mobile Twitter clients out there.

On the downside, Twittix is rather buggy at present. For instance, I found that the app sometimes crashed when trying to enter the figure ’1′, and another error occurred when I tried to reply @ someone. The program is in early release stage though, so hopefully these glitches will be ironed out in time.

Overall though, Twittix is a decent mobile Twitter client that manages to combine a handsome range of features into a slick and streamlined user interface.
