A first look at Firefox Mobile (Fennec)

Browsing the Web on a mobile phone is traditionally such a painful process that many of us simply don’t bother. Thankfully things are beginning to change though. We’ve already seen the Beta release of the slick Opera Mobile browser for Windows Mobile and UIQ devices. Now, Mozilla is getting in on the act with its [...]

Whatever happened to…WordPerfect?

What causes an application that once ruled the software world to completely fall from grace? That’s the question we’ll be posing in a new regular feature on OnSoftware. To kick-start the series I’m examining perhaps the most dramatic demise in software history – that of WordPerfect.

Manage desktop wallpapers on dual monitors

I’ve had a great day today at the office: my three-year-old Dell has been replaced by a brand new Intel Core Duo machine with two monitors. Like every time you buy a new computer or install a new operating system, I’ve spent a while configuring and tweaking the system, installing my favorite apps and customizing [...]

How to: Create your own crosswords

If you’ve got a way with words and like challenging your buddies to games then why not make a crossword puzzle for them? If you’re not very good with a pencil and a ruler then you might want to try installing a piece of software to help you put conundrums together. A good app to [...]

IM+ (IMPlus) for Windows Mobile 7.0.2-Chat with friends on multiple networks

With society pushing us to be online and available in our every waking moment, it is hardly surprising that there are a plethora of instant messaging programs available for PDAs and mobile phones. IM+ offers connection to a wide range of networks without becoming too bloated or over-complex. The first thing we noticed after installing IM+ was the simplicity of its user interface. As soon as the program opens, you can get to work configuring your accounts. IM+ lets you access the popular MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, AOL (AIM), Jabber and Google Talk networks, meaning that whoever you need to stay in touch with, IM+ will be able to help you out.

On Windows applications featuring such a range of connectivity, it’s normal to see a complex list of options when the configuration process starts. IM+ simplifies the process of setting up your accounts, and beyond message alerts, contains practically no options to configure. This may put off more advanced users who enjoy tinkering with their accounts but we thought it was a good move on the part of Shape Services (IM+’s creators). The only problem we noticed when setting up our account details was that the ‘backspace’ key on our device’s touch screen keyboard didn’t work. This is of course a small issue, but it slowed us down when we made a mistake.

The contact list display (or ‘Roster’) in IM+ should be immediately recognisable to anyone who’s used an instant messenger service before. Giving you the choice of whether to view all your contacts or just those online, IM+ also sorts your contacts by groups if requested. Selecting an online contact immediately initiates a chat with them, while the holding your stylus on the contact will provide some limited options referring to that contact, such as ‘rename’, ‘delete’ and ‘info’. We were disappointed that ‘info’ didn’t try to display a contact’s full profile rather than just their email address. We thought that a more full extract of the contact’s online profile would have been useful, at least including their birthday, homepage and interests.

Entering the text for sending messages was simple enough. As usual, we found the Transcriber feature to be the easiest and most accurate method of text entry, but this is very much a matter of personal preference for the individual user. IM+ also allows you to copy and paste text from other applications into your chat window; particularly useful if you’re using the program to collaborate on a work project, or even just to send your friend a link. IM+ also supports the most popular emoticons for instant messaging, for those times when words just can’t convey your feelings.

Up against some stiff competition, IM+ is an excellent chat program for your Pocket PC. While it has a couple of small issues and omissions, it is easy to use, relatively small and very stable. In other words, an excellent way of staying in contact even when you’ve got a good excuse not to!

Free Translator 1.0.21-Translate to and from a range of languages

If you’ve ever used the Google Translate tool then you’ll know just how great it is for translating text from one language to another.

If you want a slightly more convenient way of using the service on your iPhone then check out Free Translator. The app provides a mobile-optimized interface for Google Translate that makes it much quicker and easier to perform translations.

Once Free Translator is launched you need to click on the source language then select a target language, from the choice of 32. Then, just type in the text you wish to convert and click the ‘Translate’ button for an instant translation. You even get the choice to email the translated text with a single click, making it ideal for writing to foreign friends, colleagues or customers on the fly.

Because it uses the Google translation engine, Free Translator provides fairly accurate and comprehensive results, although, of course, it’s still not perfect. The one major drawback of the program though, is that it requires an Internet connection into order to work. This could make it quite costly unless you have a cheap data plan.

One thing I think that could’ve enhanced the usefulness of Free Translator is some kind of speech feature to help you pronounce words in other language.

Free Translator is useful for anyone who needs to interact in different languages – just watch out for the Internet rates!

MobiSystems OfficeSuite 5.30 (S60 5th)-Carry your office documents with you anywhere anytime

Given the choice, most of us would surely prefer to use their desktop machine for working on office documents rather than the tiny screen of their mobile. However, there are times when it’s useful, such as checking a written assignment on the bus into university, or doing some last minute tweaks of an Excel sheet on the way to a meeting.

MobiSystems OfficeSuite helps you view and edit your office documents on the go – and it’s remarkable how painless it makes this. The program allows you to open and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, as well as many other popular formats, (RTF, TXT, etc.)

There are two different modes in MobiSystems OfficeSuite – ‘View’ mode, which lets you open and read documents, and ‘Edit’ mode, where you can actually manipulate the document, saving it back to its original format.

Opening documents in MobiSystems OfficeSuite is a quick and effortless task, and once a document has loaded you’ll find a bevy of editing tools at your disposal, whether you’re using the word processor, spreadsheet, or presentation app. Granted, there aren’t as many features as Word, Excel or Powerpoint, but OfficeSuite is nevertheless surprisingly powerful, enabling features such as image embedding, hyperlink support, password protection, and much more. The application also includes spelling assistance in six languages (English, German, Spanish, French, Dutch and Italian), featuring auto-complete and underlining of mis-spelt words.

Ultimately, of course, using an office suite on a mobile phone will always be hampered by the small screen size. There is a zoom functionality MobiSystems OfficeSuite, where you can pre-select the zoom percentage or customize it yourself. However, I feel the program could’ve gone a little further in terms of making viewing easier. For instance, it would’ve been nice to have a way of quickly zooming in and out using hotkeys or the directional buttons, instead of having to wade through the options menu every time.

Aside from this point, MobiSystems OfficeSuite is a fast and powerful solution for viewing and editing documents on the move.

Google Mobile App 0.3.400.2316-Search Google from your iPhone

Want access to the trendiest search tool from the trendiest mobile phone? Then you need Google Mobile App for iPhone.

The application is designed to make searches on your iPhone much easier, as well as adding a raft of search functions. Not only does the program allow you to search the Web with Google, but you can also use it to search Google Maps, Wikipedia, news, and images, as well as local storage and contacts on your Apple phone.

Undoubtedly the big draw of Google Mobile App is its voice recognition. Once you launch the app you simply need to hold the phone to your mouth and the iPhone’s motion sensor will activate the voice search function. You can also access this manually by clicking on the microphone icon. Then, it’s just a case of speaking your search term into the phone and waiting a few seconds for the results to load. Except it’s not really that simple. We first tried the feature using single-word searches and the results were generally pretty accurate. However, once you start requesting multiple words or sentences, Google Mobile App struggles a bit. Perhaps this could be my British accent though, because according to the spiel, the app is optimized for a North American accent. As a result, getting the right results often involved me pulling out my very worst Clint Eastwood impression.

All of the Web search results you perform with Google Mobile App are displayed in Safari, which does become pretty annoying, because it means you can’t go back to your searches very easily. However, I guess it’s asking a bit much of Google to create a fully integrated browser with the app.

On the plus side, there are a lot of other Google applications available in the Google Mobile App, including GMail, Calendar, Reader, Notebook and Maps. Another great thing about using Google Mobile App is the way it recognizes your current location and personalizes certain results accordingly. For instance, if you search for “Pizza” it will show you results of local pizza restaurants; likewise “Movie showtimes” will yield details of screenings in your immediate vicinity.

There are several interesting settings you can fiddle about with, including searchable items, SafeSearch toggling, customized start screen, and screen rotation.

It might not be the polished search experience you’ve been dreaming of, but Google Mobile App does offer some incredibly powerful functionality – and it’s free!

Keepass for J2ME 1.3.0-Password manager

Keep all your passwords stored safely so you don’t forget them and no-one else gets their hands on them with this password manager that has everything filed away very nicely. The free software allows you to categorise all your passwords which is very helpful if you have many different secret words and numbers and provides a search facility making it easier for you to retrieve them all.

The installation is a little long-winded but Keepass promises to be very secure working with a ‘Master Key’ to stop any intruders from breaking the lock. Once you have transferred your data into the manager you are able to view but not alter data records. However, if you’re looking for somewhere to store all your secrets, Keepass is a pretty good place.
